Information from ~Heel regarding the Zeel® and Traumeel® line of products:
According to the “2000 Canadian Community Health Survey”, arthritis and other rheumatic conditions affect nearly 4 million Canadians aged 15 years and older – approximately 1 in 6 people. All forms of arthritis share common symptoms such as pain, swelling, or stiffness in or around the joints. If left untreated, these can affect the structure and functioning of the joints, leading to increased pain, disability, and difficulty in performing everyday activities. Although there is no known cure for arthritis at the present time, appropriate treatment, including medication, exercise, and various forms of physical therapy, has been shown to prevent disability, maintain function, and reduce pain.
~Heel offers a line of botanicals-based products that address the symptoms of arthritis, and whose effectiveness is supported by clinical studies.
The basic protocol is the Zeel® line of tablets and ointment. In a clinical study, Zeel® tablets were found to be as effective as Vioxx® and Celebrex® (two common modern medications for arthritis) in the treatment of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee, and were significantly better tolerated. Basic research has demonstrated that Zeel® relieves pain by slowing down the inflammatory process. Zeel® has been designed to address joint pain without causing undesirable digestive system upset or cardiovascular side effects, and can be used by diabetics. Long term use of Zeel® can significantly reduce the intensity of pain as well as reduce the frequency of acute bouts of inflammation.
For acute pain and inflammation, ~Heel offers the Traumeel® line of tablets and ointment. Traumeel® has been studied in vitro and was found to decrease the activity of inflammatory chemicals. It is recommended in all inflammatory conditions where NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are required. It is commonly included in the treatment of osteoarthritis especially during flare-up, when there are high levels of pain and inflammation. Traumeel® is made up of a combination of 12 botanical extracts and 1 mineral substance that have been shown to act together to control the inflammatory process.
Although further research is needed in order to determine if glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulfate relieve pain by slowing down the degeneration involved in osteoarthritis, or if it helps to rebuild cartilage, clinical experience has shown that supplementing the cartilage with a ready-made nutritional building material, such as a glucosamine joint formula, is quite effective in helping to reduce pain. These are not meant to substitute for other products such as Zeel® and Traumeel® that actually work on the inflammatory process. They are meant to add value to an osteoarthritis treatment through their complementary action.
For cases of more severe pain, the effectiveness of certain enzymes in the treatment of rheumatic pain is well known worldwide. Wobenzym® N works through a combination of mechanisms: it speeds up the breakdown of molecules involved in inflammation, and improves blood flow. This combination results in sustained reduction of inflammation, swelling and pain.
