| Back Pain? You're not alone... |
| Were you aware 70 to 85 percent of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives? Each year 5 to 10 per cent of the workforce is off work due to low back pain. Back pain typically affects the working-aged population and is a serious health problem that often goes untreated. One of the reasons back pain is so common is that it has so many different causes:
|
- Work-related injuries
- Sports injuries
- Poor posture
- Stress
- Pregnancy
- Accidents
- Improper lifting
Any of these things can affect the normal range of motion of your spine and surrounding musculature. Problems with your lower back may be revealed through many different symptoms:
- Leg pain with numbness, tingling and or weakness
- Back or leg pain during coughing or sneezing
- Difficulty standing up after sitting for any period of time
- Stiffness in the morning that decreases when you move around
- Pain in your hip, buttock, thigh, knee or foot
- Inability to turn or bend to each side equally
- Pain which prevents you from sleeping well
- Pain that persists or worsens after 48 hours
Many therapies are commonly used in the treatment of low back pain. While more serious causes of low back pain need to be ruled out, uncomplicated acute low back pain is often effectively treated using Chiropractic adjustments, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory products such as Advil or Ibuprofen, along with very limited bed rest, if necessary.
Gentle activity, prescribed by a health care professional, can help most low back pain sufferers get back to normal sooner.
Workers Safety and Insurance Board recently conducted a study on the effectiveness of care for acute low-back pain. The findings demonstrated that with chiropractic care, patients returned to work faster, and with less disability, as compared to other physical therapies.
If you have concerns about your back, consult your Chiropractic doctor or other health care professional before taking any action.
